How buyers typically differentiate
304 is frequently used when general corrosion resistance is enough. 316 is often considered for more corrosive, humid, or marine-adjacent applications.
Your drawing should name the grade. If you are still deciding, describe the operating environment, cleaning chemicals, and outdoor exposure so quote review can ask better questions.
Machining and documentation
Stainless usually costs more to machine than aluminum or free-machining brass. Live tooling on the lathe can still add flats and cross holes when the process fits.
Request MTRs or heat-lot documentation with your RFQ when required; availability will be confirmed on the quote. Ask whether customer-supplied stainless stock can be accepted for your project.
