Start with the print
Attach a drawing or CAD file with revision control if available. Clear dimensions, datums, and critical features reduce quote churn.
If the model and drawing disagree, say which document wins.
Material and grade
Name the exact grade (for example 6061-T6 or 316), not only the family (“aluminum” or “stainless”).
Ask whether customer-supplied stock can be accepted. If you will supply material, note condition and any paperwork that travels with the lot.
Quantity, tolerances, finish, timing
Include quantity (prototype vs production), critical tolerances, surface finish or secondary processing, and required delivery date.
Tight tolerances and finishes drive time and cost — call out what is truly critical.
Documentation and application
Request MTRs or heat-lot documentation on the RFQ if your quality system needs them; availability is confirmed on the quote.
